H Street Country Club Washington DC

Sometimes we all just need to act like kids again. When you’re in DC and want to party like its 1996, head over to H Street Country Club for some great drinks, food, and fun games like skeeball and shuffleboard. Are you ready to get competitive? There’s even a miniature golf course on the second floor of this city spot!

The indoor course boasts nine quirky holes of mini golf, most with a DC theme. The Hostess Handbook suggests you plan about 35 minutes to play a round with your friends. And if you have dinner at H Street Country Club on a Friday or Saturday, you can play a round of golf for free!

Located in the trendy H Street neighborhood, H Street Country Club is a great place to plan a casual party or date. Nothing breaks the ice like drinking and gaming!

Chocolate Fondant Recipe

There’s a reason this chocolate lava cake is found on the menu at nearly every restaurant (and one I used to make at Michelin starred La Locanda di Bu in Nusco, Italy) – it’s super easy to make and incredibly yummy! This is one tasty treat that is sure to never go out of style.  The Hostess Handbook suggests making it a bit boozy with a few slugs of Bailey’s – with a bottle of bubbly and chocolate covered strawberries, this is one dessert that is guaranteed to give you that lovin feeling.

Ingredients:

100 g superfine sugar

100 g A.P. flour, sifted

100 g dark chocolate (70%), broken up into pieces

100 g butter, cut into small chunks

50 g butter, melted

2 eggs

2 egg yolks

Bailey’s

cocoa powder, for dusting

4 ramekins or 150-200 ml moulds

 Directions:

1-    Grease the ramekins with the melted butter in upward strokes.  Chill in the fridge for 15 min and repeat.  Dust with the cocoa powder.

2-    Over a double boiler, melt the butter and chocolate together.  Let stand to cool for 20 min. Add in the Bailey’s if wanted.

3-    Whisk together the eggs, yolks and sugar until it’s pale and fluffy – the whisk should leave a trail through the mixture.  Add the flour and mix thoroughly.

4-    Fold in the melted butter and chocolate mixture in thirds.  Pour into a pitcher or jug and then evenly distribute into the four individual ramekins.

5-    Put the ramekins on a baking tray and bake for 10-12 min at 390° F – the tops should just be forming a crust and the sides should come away from the ramekins a bit.

6-     Let them stand for 1 min, then flip over onto a plate and remove from the ramekin.  Serve with ice cream and garnish with chocolate covered strawberries.

****These can be wrapped in plastic wrap and frozen for up to one month. If cooking from frozen, add 5 min to the cooking time.

Oscar Party Essentials

Oscar Party Essentials

The Oscars are this Sunday and what a great event to throw a party for. Invite some friends over to watch on your “big screen” and have them fill out ballots for who they think will win. To get everyone excited for the ballots, have a prize that will go to the winner! Everyone always loves a good give-away! Come up with some FABtastic food that is nominee themed such as rich chocolate pie with Hilly written on it for The Help! Encourage your guests to bring themed food as well! Having popcorn displayed for your guests in these old fashion bags is super easy and will add a ton to the environment of the party!

You don’t have to go all out but decorating with these oscar party essentials is super fun and easy. Get a red carpet on the cheap from party city and a photo board for guests to take pictures with! How fun! The Hostess Handbook suggests you have your guests dress up in theme as well! Perhaps, overalls and a paint brush for The Artist or a Marilyn costume for My Week With Marilyn!

Shakshouka Recipe

Shakshouka Recipe

Contributing Chef- Abby Reibman- Author of  The Desk and The Stove

Not ready to face the world after a rowdy Saturday night? Invite your friends over for this tasty treat instead. Quickly becoming one of my all-time favorite brunch recipes, this Israeli dish certainly hits the spot. With the spicy tomato sauce and runny egg yolks, you’ll definitely want to mop it all up with some toasted pita or lightly grilled baguette. The Hostess Handbook suggests serving it up with some Bloody Mary’s for the ultimate weekend brunch party. So sababa.

¼ cup olive oil
½ cup water
3 jalapeños, stemmed, seeded and finely chopped
1 white onion, finely chopped
4 garlic cloves, made into a paste with salt
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tbl smoked paprika
1 28-ounce can whole peeled tomatoes, un-drained
8 eggs
½ cup feta cheese, crumbled (I used ricotta as I hate feta!)
1 tbl black olives
1 tbl toasted pine-nuts
2 tablespoons parsley and cilantro, chopped

1-    Heat up the oil in a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add the garlic paste, chopped onions and chilies.  Cook until soft (approx. 4-5 min).  Add the cumin, cayenne pepper and paprika and cook for an addition 2 min.

2-    Pour the crushed tomatoes into a large bowl and crush with your hands.  Add to the sauté pan along with ½ cup water.  Reduce heat down to medium and let simmer until slightly reduced (10-12 min).

3-    Crack the eggs over the sauce so that they are evenly distributed across the surface. Cover skillet and cook until yolks are just set (4 min).  Baste the sauce over the egg whites with a spoon (be careful not to disturb the yolks!).  Spoon bits of feta (or ricotta), the pine-nuts and black olives over the shakshouka and sprinkle with the chopped parsley and cilantro.  Serve with toasted pita.

Everyday Etiquette: How to Navigate 101 Social Situations

This Everyday Etiquette: How to Navigate 101 Common and Uncommon Social Situations is such a cute and kitschy book to bring over to a party. The guests will want to flip through and learn how to best deal with the “uncommon” social situations. Sometimes things can get weird at parties or people bring unexpected guests and the the Host/Hostess must carry on with grace and wherewithal! This is a great guide to all things party etiquette! Also a great coffee table book for people to display!

This book is super fab and fun with a section where you can test your “Etiquette IQ”! Questions include “The proper place to wear a name tag is?” and “When inviting guests to lunch, is it proper protocol to ask them where they would like to eat?” Hmmm what are your answers? Are you an Everyday Etiquette: How to Navigate Social Situations pro? Here are a couple more questions to test your knowledge!

Chocolate covered strawberries are one of gods gifts and a Hostess Handbook must for Valentines day! Everyone loves a good chocolate covered strawberry and if you glam them up it can make the strawberries extra special and too cute to boot!

Try your hand at a tuxedo design by Culinary Delight CateringMaybe a good hint hint for your loved one? First dip in white chocolate and let harden and then dip in dark chocolate on the sides of the strawberry leaving one triangle white! Take a toothpick and dip in the dark chocolate. Use it to dot the “buttons” and  draw the “bow-tie”! Super cute!

Ingredients:

  • 6 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped
  • 3 ounces white chocolate, chopped
  • 1 pound strawberries with stems (about 20), washed and dried very well

Directions:

Put the two chocolates separate heat proof bowls. Bring two pots of water to a boil and then turn of the flame and put the chocolate bowls over the steaming water in the pots to melt the chocolate. Take the strawberries and make sure that they are fully dried off. Dip in the chocolate and let excess drip back into the bowl. Place on parchment paper and let chocolate set for 30 minutes! Voila..yummazing!
