Wine Guide for Bottles under 15 Dollars

The Hostess Handbook’s

Wine Guide for Bottles Under 15 Dollars

Every hostess with the mostest using the leastest must have a trusty wine guide for bottles under 15 dollars! It is a great resource for when you throw parties and for when you need to bring a hostess gift to a friend. Here is the ultimate wine guide for the young, broke and fabulous. Complete with food pairings!

Always look for the words: ‘grand’ ‘estate bottled’ ‘superior’ ‘aged in new French oak 10 months +’ on a bottle before you buy it as a basic guide to good wine!

Fun Fact: Wine ranges in proof from 11-16%. Check the bottle if that is a deciding factor for you!

Contributing Wine Guide Master- Maxim Rohowsky

*Whites/Rose*

-Ventana 2008 gewurztraminer (from Monterey CA)

With fondu.

-La Vielle Ferme 2010 1.5L (Rhone Valley Vineyards)

Pair with brie, baguette, cooking

-Nino Franco Proseccco

Try it with cheese sticks

 -Essay Chenin Blanc

Gruyere cheese

 -Les Roches Blanches (Muscadet)

With Goat cheese.

 -Ca Donini Pinot Grigio

With Piave cheese

 -San Quirico Vernaccia

With Tomatoe & Mozzerella

-Jaboulet Rose

Feta or other domestic/ import French Sheep cheese.

*Reds*

-Lan Rioja

Try it with home made chorizo pizza or paella. Also, a grand Saffron spiced rice shrimp/ chicken dish is a great pairing.

-Sherman & Hooker’s Shebang (CA wine)

Great wine! I love how it comes in a glass jug 1.5L with screw top or in a 750ml bottle. Must have if you can find it!

-Los Vascos Cabernet

The Rothschild family makes some of the best wine in France. They bought land in South America and decided to make very good wine there too. Have it with grilled ribs!

-Aguaribay Malbec (2009)

Pair with grilled red meat or veggie burger, meat loaf, Indian spices. Dollar for dollar defiantly good.

-E. Guigal Cotes du Rhone (France 2007 or other similar vintages)

E.Guigal much like ‘Louis jadot’ are good names in French wine. I almost always like any French Appellation wine. Rhone is known for great robust red wine on the dry side. Good with a hearty meal or with cocktail food.

-Louis Jadot Pinot Noir (Appellation Bourgogne Controlee)

I like to find ways to drink red wine with fish because I just don’t like white. So BBQ sword fish or sushi are good foods to pair with a pinot noir you like. Most Louis Jadot is good even their wine under 15.00 USD.

-Menage a Trios wine. CA blend.

Women & Men love this! Very popular seller!

-Black Stone CA (Merlot)

Good with blue cheese or Roquefort.

-Villa Puccini Toscana Italy

I like the recent vintages. It is good with lasagna, pasta and pizza. Relatively light good table wine.

-My tenth wine pick is: “when in doubt go with a bottle of Chianti and/or Pinot Grigio if you have to put wine on the table trust the Italians”. See what your local store recommends if that’s where your shop or do research before hitting up big retail stores.

The Go-Towel is a great hostess gift for the girl on the go! Get it? “Go” towel, girl on the go…ok enough! But seriously this is a Hostess Handbook pic because it is super easy to carry around and super earth friendly. The “pop-up” towel is 100% bamboo and biodegradable. Just add water to the compressed towel and it expands! You can also re-use the towel as it is extremely sturdy! The Go Towel is great for gym workouts, travel and kitchen clean up!

The Popsy Cake is a great party dessert item because it is is fun, unique and easy to serve. Make a cute display with the pops and let guests choose from the variety of flavors.

These desserts are perfect for a charity event as some of the proceeds from each pop goes to The Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship. This network’s mission is to inspire young people from low-income communities to stay in school, to recognize opportunities and to plan for successful futures. The Hostess Handbook loves a good cause and this one is ohhhh so yummy!

Hostess Gifts: Christmas Cranberry Jars!

Santa’s Helper- Nicole Garvey

There’s nothing like making a homemade gift for the holidays, and this festive holiday Cranberry Sauce is a treat for all of the senses!! On top of everything, its fun and very easy to make – your kitchen will smell like the Christmas for a week! The Hostess Handbook suggests you use as jam on toast, with a bagel and cream cheese or as a side or sauce to any meal (especially pork or turkey!). Its also delicious mixed into yogurt!

All you need are some jars (see one above which you can buy at any department or grocery store), some festive ribbon and the below recipe:
4 bags of fresh Cranberries
Sugar
1 Litre of Orange Juice
1 Orange
2 Cinnamon Sticks
Directions: Pour the cranberries into a large pot. Pour in enough orange juice to almost cover the cranberries (should be about an inch from the top of them). Bring the pot to a boil while zesting and juicing one orange into the pot, then add the cinnamon sticks. Bring the heat down to a simmer and the cranberries will start to pop and form a sauce. After about 15 minutes, add in a cup of sugar. Let simmer and thicken another 10 minutes and taste. If still tart, add more sugar to your liking and voila!! If you want to make it really special, add a 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg and ground cloves each. But no need to break the bank if you don’t have these on standby in the cupboard.
Fill the Jars and decorate away!!
(Note – the sauce will thicken as it cools, so if its a little runny, don’t worry!)
